Autumn Sunflowers is the title of the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama's Giant Sculpture Project exhibition, 2022. This exhibition ran alongside Pamela Howard's exhibition The Art of Making Theatre which was also featured in the Linbury Gallery.
6 groups of first year BA and MA students worked together to create 6 giant sculptures of Sunflowers ranging between 4 and 6 meters high. All materials used are 100% recyclable, and after the exhibition the sunflowers where outsourced to schools before returning to the college.
Autumn Sunflowers was a response to the war in Ukraine and a recognition of the chaos to Ukrainian Students who are trying to continue their studies as refugees in the UK. The exhibition is a symbol of welcome and solidarity to Ukrainian refugees and students in Cardiff.
Below is a 5meter high sunflower that myself and the named collaborators above worked on. We decided to use "Fragile", "Hope", "Decay", and the phrase "Relationship with the Sun" to guide the design.
